I love teas. This orange hibiscus tea is made with dried hibiscus flowers and dried oranges slices into a beautiful blend of fruity and floral. The great thing about this tea is that you can drink it hot or you can also turn it into iced tea if that is what you prefer. Pretty cool, right? You can also switch it up and add some spices by way of cloves or cinnamon if you want to. The dried oranges are simply made ahead from fresh orange slices which have been sun-dried.
Other hot drinks you can try are this simple cinnamon tea or this Baileys hot chocolate. For hibiscus-inspired recipes, you can either try this hibiscus syrup, sobolo or this hibiscus and passion fruit chiller.
Ingredients
For this 2 ingredient tea, all you need is some dried orange slices and dried hibiscus. Of course some water too, but that is pretty obvious.
The orange slices are obtained by simply slicing some oranges and then leaving them to dry in the sun. Now if you are in a place that doesn't have too much sunshine then you can either use a dehydrator or gently dry them out in the oven.
A good tip if you are drying in the sun, is to cover the slices with a mesh or a clean, unused mosquito net to keep flies away from the oranges.
Drying by the sun takes a long time and it took me several days to get it to a place where they were dry enough to be used in this orange hibiscus tea.
Instructions
Making this tea is so incredibly easy. Depending on how strong you like your tea you can adjust the recipe accordingly. Do note that adding too much of the dried hibiscus or letting it brew too long will result in sour-tasting tea.
To make the tea, add the dried hibiscus to water in a pan and then leave to simmer gently.
Add the orange slices and leave to simmer further. Then sieve the contents of the bowl and pour the tea into teacups. That's all you need to do for this orange hibiscus tea. You can sweeten it with sugar, honey, or this beautiful ginger syrup.
Substitutions
- Dried tangerine slices - instead of dried oranges, you can use dried tangerines for this tea.
Variations
- Iced tea - you can make this orange hibscus tea into iced tea by adding some sugar or even some ginger syrup and chilling it. This makes a lovely refreshing drink.
- Cinnamon - the addition of cinnamon takes this tea to another level, giving off a very christmassy vibe.
Tip
If you like your tea a bit lighter then reduce the amount of hibiscus you use to 1 teaspoon instead of 2 teaspoons.
Another good idea is to taste your tea as you are brewing it. The sweetness of your orange slices will also add to the final taste of your tea. If your oranges are not sweet at all, you may need to let them simmer for a shorter period.
