Sometimes a regular breakfast of bread and fried eggs just doesn't do it. A great way to switch that up is with this savoury french toast. Even before I had ever eaten regular French toast, I'd eaten the savoury ones. These savoury dipped bread slices have some black pepper, white pepper, onions and garlic added to them and contain no milk. The great thing is that you can either use fresh bread or not so fresh bread as both will soak up the egg mixture.

Garlic breath in the morning is not a mood booster and therefore you could leave the garlic out or use roasted garlic or garlic powder, both of which are subtler in taste. Other great recipes you may want to try for breakfast are these English pancakes, this brown rice porridge, bagel with cheese, eggs and bacon or this very popular breakfast sandwich.
Instructions
This recipe is as easy to make as buttering your bread. Crack the eggs into a large bowl and then add salt to taste, garlic, onions black pepper and white pepper. Whisk everything until well combined. Soak the slices of bread in the egg mixture and fry in a pan with some butter or vegetable oil.
The simplest way to incorporate the garlic and onions is to grate or blend them. While you could attempt making this recipe by chopping both garlic and onion, in my experience, they tend to not stick well to the bread.
Substitutions
- Whole wheat bread - For bread choice, you're really only limited by your imagination: whole wheat bread, white bread or a brioche - basically any kind of bread which soaks up some liquid pretty well will work with this recipe. Personally, I wouldn’t necessarily use a super open crumb bread type just because a lot of your egg mixture will be left in the bowl.
- Garlic powder - fresh garlic in the moring can be a bit much so you can substitute fresh garlic with garlic powder.
- Onion powder - if you do not like onions or find the fresh ones a bit too strong, you can use onion powder.
Variations
- No garlic -You can completely opt out of the garlic and this will still taste good.
- Milk - For a lighter version of this recipe you can add milk to the egg mixture.
- Herbs - You can add herbs of your choice, like parsley or coriander to this mixture as well before pan frying the dipped bread slices.

Savoury French Toast
Ingredients
- 2 large eggs whisked
- ¼ teaspoon garlic grated or paste
- ½ teaspoon onion grated or paste
- ½ teaspoon black peppercorns finely crushed
- ¼ teaspoon white pepper
- salt to taste
- 3 slices white bread approx 1cm thick
- butter for frying
Instructions
- Whisk eggs, garlic, onion, black and white pepper, and salt in a deep and wide bowl.
- Heat a frying pan over medium heat and a dollop of butter.
- Dip bread into the egg mixture and then fry in the pan.
- Fry each slice for about 2 minutes per side or until golden brown.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Dip the slices of bread in the egg mixture and fry immediately rather than letting them sit in the mixture for too long. If your bread slices are thin, letting them sit in the mixture for too long will make them difficult too handle and they may break apart.
