A great alternative to a mug of steaming coffee is this iced coffee on a hot day. If you don't have access to making freshly brewed coffee from ground-roasted coffee beans, then instant coffee is a good enough alternative. This recipe also incorporates sweet condensed milk and fresh milk over ice. Even if you don't generally like coffee with sugar, this easy recipe is worth trying.
If you are in a part of the world where it is getting colder then this might not be that appealing to you right now. However, the heat will be back so save this recipe and come back to try it once the sun is blazing.
All the sugar in this recipe comes from the sweetened condensed milk with no extra additional sweetener. Fresh milk is then used to top up the iced coffee.
This recipe is a great addition to my other drink recipes like this tangerine, pineapple, and sugarcane juice or this very refreshing passion fruit and hibiscus chiller. As this drink is rather sweet, a great snack to go with it is these fantastic savoury agbeli kaklo, made from cassava.
Ingredients
The ingredients for this iced coffee with instant coffee are kept fairly simple, the recipe is easy to follow, and this literally takes less than 10 minutes to put together.
- instant coffee - Nescafe is what I used for this.
- sweetened condensed milk - excellent taste and the source of sugar in this recipe.
- fresh milk - this can be either dairy or plant-based.
- almond essence - this is optional but lends this iced coffee a lovely hint of almond.
Instructions
Dissolve the coffee in some boiling water and then add the condensed milk. Add reguar ice cubes or coffee ice cubes.
Add the milk, a dash of almond essence and stir. That's it!
Whether a long glass or a small round one, that is all it takes for this delicious and easy homemade iced coffee with instant coffee.
Substitutions
This iced coffee can be switched up pretty easily without losing too much taste. With regards to substitutions in terms of milk or other ingredients, the following are great alternatives:
- Almond, Soy or Oat milk - these are a great alternative if you are lactose intolerant or you just don't like regular cow's milk. You will need to replace the sweetened condensed milk with lactose-free options. These are however not always readily available to purchase.
- Simple Syrup - this makes a good substitute for sweetened condensed milk, which is the sweet component. The resulting iced coffee will not be as creamy as in the original recipe, however, it will still be very tasty. Great syrups which will add tons of flavour to your iced coffee are caramel syrup or chocolate syrup. The chocolate syrup will give your iced coffee a mocha feel and that is absolutely divine too.
- Sugar - you can also substitute the condensed milk with plain old white or brown sugar. All you need to do is make sure the sugar dissolves properly. Ideally, you will want to dissolve your sugar when you are dissolving the instant coffee.
Additions
- Whipped Cream - For that extra bit of indulgence, you can add whipped cream to your iced coffee.
- Alcohol - for the grown and sexy, you can add a shot of rum or Baileys.
Tip
If you do not want your iced coffee to be watered down by ice cubes then you can freeze some of the instant ice coffee, or just plain coffee in an ice cube tray and use that instead of ice cubes.
