Making caramelised onions isn't difficult. However, it does require some patience. This recipe is a very basic one but it can be improved with herbs, stock, or any other extras.
If you have a thousand things going on, then you probably shouldn't add these onions to your To-Do list. You will want to make enough time for this as it is not a rushed process. It also pays to keep the onions sliced evenly to ensure that there is an even cook on the onions.

The trick to making these onions is to keep the heat low and keep an eye on them so that they do not burn. You can use caramelised onions for burgers like in this Bambara bean burger. They are also wonderful in salads, sandwiches or pies. They have such great flavour as well as a wonderful aroma - very mouthwatering.

Caramelised Onions
Ingredients
- 2 large yellow onions
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil
- salt
Instructions
- Slice onions into equal but thin slices.
- Heat a frying pan with vegetable oil.
- Fry the onions over medium heat for about 3 minutes and then turn down the heat to low.
- Sprinkle a bit of salt over the onions.
- Cook the onions making sure to stir every 10-15 minutes until the onions are a dark golden brown colour.
- Store in an airtight container and in the fridge.
Notes
- You can spruce up your caramelised onions by adding herbs such as thyme or rosemary.
- These onions keep well in the fridge for about 5 days. They can also be frozen for up to about 2 months.
