    Easy Ginger Syrup

Published: Apr 25, 2022 by Edinam

This ginger syrup which you can use for ginger ale is so incredibly simple to make. It will make you wonder why you haven't been making it all this while. The syrup itself, made from real ginger, will have a yellow to pale yellow range in colour. What it lacks in colour, however, it makes up for in taste. The syrup is mild and pleasant to drink (when you mix it with sparklig water!) but if you want a deeper ginger flavour then there are a couple of ways to do that. See the recipe card for more details.

Another syrup you can make is this hibiscus syrup or add a bit of ginger syrup to this hibiscus passion fruit chiller.

    Ingredients

To make this ginger syrup, all you basically have to do is to make a simple syrup and then steep and simmer the fresh, chopped ginger in that syrup mixture until you get the desired depth of flavour you want. To make a simple syrup, you need one part of sugar to one part of water.

    Instructions

Chop the ginger stems into smaller bits. A better option is to crush them or grate them to release their flavour even more. For this recipe however, we make a basic ginger syrup that you can always build on depending on what your tastebuds want.

Mix the sugar with the water and then add the chopped ginger pieces to the sugar-water mixture. Bring to a boil and then leave to simmer. After strain the mixture and then bottle the syrup and store in the fridge. See full recipe instructions in recipe card.

    Substitutions

    • Brown sugar - if you would like a darker colour then you can use brown sugar instead of white.

    Storage

This syrup stores very well in the fridge. I have kept it up to 2 weeks without any issues.

    Tips

This syrup can easily be turned into ginger ale by adding some sparkling water or soda water. Add a couple of ice cubes and some slices of lemon or lime and that's a refreshing drink ready to go! This is a great alternative to your favourites like Canada Dry or Schweppes.

You can also use this in your favourite cocktail- if for whatever reason you've planned to make a Moscow Mule for your guests and discover to your horror that you don't have any ginger beer, this can serve as a great subsititute with some adjustments.

    Notes

    1. After chopping the ginger stems, you can further crush them with your knife so that more of the flavour gets released.
    2. You can chop the ginger stems into smaller pieces or even grate them. The greater the surface area, the more you will get out of your ginger. If you do grate the ginger then make sure you're sieving properly so that you dont get any ginger bits in the final syrup.
    3. You can make some ginger ale with this syrup by mixing some of the syrup with sparkling water or soda water. Add a few lime or lemon slices and some ice cubes and that's it.
