Ginger Syrup

A simple recipe for making ginger syrup. Suitable for making ginger ale.

Ingredients

  • 100 grams ginger chopped
  • 300 grams sugar
  • 300 grams water

Instructions

  • Mix the sugar with the water in a saucepan.
  • Add the chopped ginger.
  • Bring to a boil and then leave to simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • Pass the mixture through a sieve and discard the ginger pieces.
  • Leave to cool and pour into bottle.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  1. After chopping the ginger stems, you can further crush them with your knife so that more of the flavour gets released.
  2. You can chop the ginger stems into smaller pieces or even grate them. The greater the surface area, the more you will get out of your ginger. If you do grate the ginger then make sure you're sieving properly so that you dont get any ginger bits in the final syrup.
  3. You can make some ginger ale with this syrup by mixing some of the syrup with sparkling water or soda water. Add a few lime or lemon slices and some ice cubes and that's it.
