Tea made from scratch is just the absolute best. Like in this ginger turmeric tea with star anise, you know exactly what goes into it, plus you can adjust it according to your taste. This tea is quick to make, good for your immune system, and incredibly soothing. The addition of star anise lends this tea a warm, sweet note.

Everything that needs to be said about ginger has already been said - I love it! I mean the name of this blog should tell you enough. Ginger is healthy, good for the immune system, and is just the perfect addition to so many dishes.

I use ginger in almost everything: steaming goat meat for this delicious okro soup, this waakye stew which is a MUST try and kelewele, a sweet and spicy snack made from ripe plantains.

In my younger years of cooking, I never used turmeric but I am a huge fan now. Other fantastic recipes in which I use turmeric are:

    • golden turmeric rice cooked with onions and garlic
    • a turmeric smoothie that packs a punch
    • these immune-boosting ginger turmeric shots

How to make ginger turmeric tea

The great thing about this tea is that it is simple to make and pretty uneventful (unless you count staining your fingers while you peel the skin off the turmeric).

Turmeric, ginger and star anise brewing in pot.

Chop the ginger and turmeric. Add the star anise and put all of them in a pot of water.

Simmer further and turn off the heat.

That is all there is to making this simple ginger and turmeric tea.

    Substitutions

    • Turmeric powder- don't have fresh turmeric? Then use turmeric powder and depending on how strong you want it you can add more or less. Start with about ½ a teaspoon per cup and add more if you need to.

    Variations

    • Iced Tea - you made copious amounts of tea and don't know what to do with the rest? Add some sugar or sweetener of choice, chill and enjoy as iced tea.

    Tip

Don't want to stain your fingers while peeling turmeric? Use gloves. Alternatively, scrub the turmeric roots clean and use them without peeling.

    Ingredients

    • fresh turmeric about the thickness of an index finger and 4 centimeters long
    • fresh ginger roots about the thickness of an index finger and 4 centimeters long
    • 2 whole star anise
    • 1 lemon optional
    • water

    Instructions

    • Peel and chop up the ginger and the turmeric. See note 1.
    • Add about 650 ml (about 22 oz) of water to a pot and then add the chopped ginger, turmeric and the star anise.
    • Simmer for about 10 minutes over medium heat.
    • Unless you have small bits of the ingredients floating in the tea, you do not need to strain it.
    • Pour into tea cups and serve hot with lemon, honey or both.

    Notes

    1. Turmeric can stain your fingers, but this eventually goes away. If this bothers you, you can wear gloves before peeling them.
    2. You can also chill any leftover tea and turn that into a fantastic iced tea. Add a bit of honey for sweetness and that's it!
    3. As the lemon rinds could give off a bitter taste while simmering,  I find that it is best to squeeze the lemons into the finished tea.
